2013 So Far (Jan - Apr) Top 10 Pre-2013 Catchup

With the first third of the year flying past in a haze of movies I thought I'd assess my viewing in an attempt to make end of year list compiling a little easier and actually post something film related on this blog.

In the first four months of 2013 I've seen over 230 films for the first time, for my first trick these are my favourite 10 of the year so far:

10. Extreme Prejudice (1987) Dir. Walter Hill

9. Peacock (2010) Dir. Michael Lander

8. The Laughing Policeman (1973) Dir. Stuart Rosenberg

7. No (2012) Dir. Pablo Larrain

6. 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007) Dir. Cristian Mungiu

5. The Day of the Locust (1975) Dir. John Schlesinger

4. The Border (1982) Dir. Tony Richardson

3. Take Shelter (2011) Dir. Jeff Nichols

2. Metropolitan (1990) Dir. Whit Stillman

1. You, The Living (2007) Dir. Roy Andersson

Seen any or all of these? What was your favourite film of the past 4 months? Comment below or tweet @bbbgtoby with #pre2013.

  1. 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 Days in incredible. A perfect movie. For me it would be Berlin Alexanderplatz as the top film of my first 4 months of the year.

    1. Berlin Alexanderplatz must have taken four months to watch! I've heard great things but I'm really not sure I have the stamina to get through it.

Does it count as a 15 hour movie then?

  2. Nice to see 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days and Take Shelter on here. Sadly, I haven't seen the other 8 films yet.

    1. Obviously there are a few genre films on here that might not appeal to all tastes but most of it is truly great cinema, I need a better word for it without sounding pretentious. If it was fiction I would refer to it as award worthy literature but cinema is the medium rather than the style so doesn't work as well. Any suggestions?

    2. I'm afraid not. They look great, though, and I've heard high praise of most of them.

    3. I'll have to brainstorm over the next 3 months or so to come up with something better for the next post.

  3. I love the dark humor of You, The Living (2007). I highly recommend Roy Andersson's other comedy, Songs from the Second Floor (2000)

4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007), and No (2012), hopefully get to see soon.

Favorite of last 4 months? hmm, I gave these a 9 on letterboxd: Lawrence of Arabia, The General, Sherlock, Jr, Day of Wrath, The Seventh Continent, Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills, Laurence Anyways, The Place Beyond the Pines

    1. I definitely want to get involved in watching more Andersson after You, The Living. It was the vote from Mike Leigh in the Sight & Sound poll that got me interested.

I'm pretty jealous of Laurence Anyways, I only have myself to blame for not seeing it when I had the chance. No 10's?

I have really fond memories of No, it feels like so long ago that I saw it but it's so vivid in my mind. Definite highlight of the recent Perth International Arts Festival.

    2. I haven't given out a perfect 10 in years, LOL. I'm okay with other reviewers doing so, though.

    3. I don't tend to give full marks first time out. It's the kind of rating I reserve for repeat viewings over a long period of time. Personally I don't tend to trust a reviewer who throws around a perfect rating on a regularly basis.

  4. Holy, 230 films in 4 months? Haha if I'm lucky, I might've seen 23 in that time.

Nice to see some love for The Laughing Policeman. Such an underrated classic.

    1. That's 230 first time viewings, not including the rewatches. It's been a wild year to date. Picking a top 10 at the end of the year will be very tough. Of course the same will go for you with only 23 seen!
